Anatol Lyabedzka: “Russia would have to make a choice”
11:42, 22/05/2006

A visit of the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka and the deputy chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front party Alyaksei Yanukevich to Washington has finished. Belarusian politicians have taken part in the session of the standing committee of the International Democratic Union, which was lasting for three days. A resolution on Belarus was adopted there. It contains the demand to release political prisoners and a statement that the presidential elections in Belarus were not legitimate. Anatol Lyabedzka and Alyaksei Yanukevich have also meetings with representatives of the US Department of State, the Council of National Security and The Congress of the United States.

“The conclusion that could be made after this trip is that the Belarusian question would not be a short-lived question,” Anatol Lyabedzka said. “A full-scale and long-term policy towards Belarus is seriously discusses in Washington today. And nobody would hush up Belarusian question in the relations with official Moscow. Previously this question was slipped at meetings of different levels between Washington and Moscow, Brussels and Moscow, and now it is on the agenda. And Russia is to make a choice, whom to join. Is it with the progressive world community or is it orientated to the support of such odious regimes as the Belarusian one”.
