After Release Zmitser Dashkevich Went On Hunger Strike 15:00, 01/06/2006
Today at 1 p.m. the leader of the Young Front Zmitser Dashkevich was released from the special detention center of Minsk city executive committee. Right after the release Zmitser Dashkevich told to the Charter”97 press center that he is going to join the hunger strike of protest against criminal prosecution of the Young Front activists, which is held in several Belarusian towns now.
The leader of the Young Front called the hunger strike started on May 29 by activists from Salihorsk, Hrodna and Minsk “a move of despair and courage”.
“I was amazed at the solidarity with the Young Front, the courage of the people who advocate the values of democracy and independence in Belarus despite of the storm of repressions. A hunger strike is announced when there is no other chance to put across your position to the authorities. I am very thankful to all brave people who carry out protests in support of our organization, and join this hunger strike,” Zmitser Dashkevich said.
Dashkevich explains his illegal arrest for 15 days by an order to all force structures to crack down on all opposition activists. As said by him, it shows regime’s fear of the Belarusian youth, who stand up for freedom and democracy in their country.
