Vadzim Dounar Fined

On June 21 the court of Leninski district of Minsk fined a Belarusian journalist, a correspondent of the Russian newspaper Kommersant Vadzim Dounar (Vadim Dovnar) 1 basic unit (31,000 BYR). He has been found guilty of petty hooliganism. This is the end of the story of the journalist’s detention near the building of the presidential administration in April.

Barysau Drivers Urged to Protest (Photo)

Young activists from Barysau hold a campaign of raising awareness of people about the deplorable state of local roads. Today Barysau activists offered drivers to express their attitude to the problem: to come to the central square of Barysau, where the city executive committee is situated, and to honk for a few minutes. Drivers were given leaflets and jeans ribbons that have become a symbol of freedom movement in Belarus.

International human rights committee facing closure in Belarus

The customs service of the airport “Minsk-2” refuses to return the money withdrawn from international coordinator of Charter’97 Andrei Sannikau three months ago. The advocate was detained March 26, in the Minsk airport, on his way home from London. At the examination, $ 1 040 and EURO 260 were withdrawn from him. Despite the paper on personal examination stating he imported no barred items was handed to Mr.Sannikau, the customs service officials claimed the money could be faked.

Putin to arrive in Belarus with only one-day visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin is to arrive in Minsk this Friday, June 23, to take part in the summit of Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and Eurasec (Eurasian Economic Community). Moreover, five Presidents of other countries are to join the summit in Minsk.

Expert: Belarusian Officials Keep Their Accounts In Russia

Yesterday in the letter to the US Congress President George Bush announced a ban for Alyaksandr Lukashenka other top officials of Belarus to use financial accounts and property in the USA. Belarusian officials in their turn stated that they do not have property in the USA. Experts do not exclude that Lukashenka’s entourage keep their accounts in Russia and the CIS countries, not in Europe or the USA.

A summit European Union-US will take place in Vienna today. The US President George Bush, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, whose country holds the EU Presidency, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the EU Javier Solana are to take part in the summit. As a reporter of Russian “Nezavisimaya gazeta” in Brussels Anna Vvedenskaya informs, referring a source in the European Commission, an issue of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, who is called “the last dictator in Europe” is to be brought up among other sensitive issues.

New UN body - Human Rights Council - established in Geneva

The first session opened with the inauguration ceremony of the Council, was attended by such speakers as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mexican Ambassador to UN and President of the Human Rights Council Luis Alfonso de Alba, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour. In his statement, Kofi Annan drew the attention of the Human Rights Council members to the necessity to adopt the Convention on protection from violent disappearances and urged them “to bring light to all those people who live in the obscure shadow of fear”.

White-Red-White Flag Over Salihorsk City Executive Committee (Photo)

A white-red-white flag has been hanged up for the third time this week by the Young Front activists in Salihorsk. Last time it was hanged up on a five-storey building near the shop “Tsentralny”, and before that in the central square of the town, near the monument of Lenin. Now the flag emerged over the building of the executive committee.

“Partnerstva” Activists Arrested 4 Months Ago

4 months ago, on February 21, 2006 in Minsk mass arrests of public activists were held. All over the country armed policemen in masks detained activists of he civil initiative of election observation “Partnerstva”. Searches were held in the apartments of observers, all office equipment was seized. Tsimafei Dranchuk, Enira Branitskaya, Mikalay Astrejka and Alyaksandr Shalajka were placed to a pre-trial detention center of the KGB (State Security Committee). The observers were charged with violation of the article 193 Part 2 of the Criminal Code (participation in an unregistered organization, infringing upon rights of citizens). The matter concerns “political” amendments introduced to the Criminal Code of Belarus in the run-up to the presidential elections. The case of the observers is studied by the court of Tsentralny district of Minsk. In June studying the case was extended for a month.
