Opposition Activist Anatol Askerka Sentenced to 10 Days of Arrest 18:39, 17/07/2006

An opposition activist Anatol Askerka was sentenced to 10 days of arrest by the court of Tsentralny district of Minsk. The politician was arrested on July 16 near the Russian Embassy in Minsk with dozens of other Belarusian citizens, who gathered near the Embassy to demand bringing up the Belarusian issue at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, and to urge Russia to stop supporting the Belarusian dictatorship.

Six citizens of Belarus, detained for the second time at about 11 a.m. on July 16 in St. Petersburg during G8 summit, were released at about 9 p.m. on the same day. As PRIMA-News reporter was told by an activist of a youth resistance group “Bunt” Svyatlana Stankevich, Russian and Belarusian secret service were beating up detainees, and threatened girls by a rape.

As the human rights center “Viasna” was informed, on July 16 in the evening a traditional protest on the Day of Solidarity was held near the Palace of Trade Unions. However, people with lit candles stood only for a little. Five activists of the United Civil Party, including the chairman of the regional structure Yury Istomin, were detained by policemen. The detained activists of the UCP were taken to the police department of Lenin district of Hrodna, where they were to provide written explanations. After that al the detainees were released.

A rally dedicated to the Day of Solidarity was held in the center of Stockholm. The Belarusians living in Sweden took to the streets with national white-red-white flags and streamers. An address of the leader of the Belarusian opposition Alyaksandr Milinkevich was read to the leaders of the countries of G8. The address urges Russia to stop supporting the Belarusian regime.

The leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka and an opposition activist Yauhen Askerka, who are tried in the court of Tsentralny District of Minsk, told to journalists that today morning they were taken from special detention center in Akrestsin Street to Tsentralny police department of Minsk. All day long policemen refused to give water to the detainees. Besides, Yauhen Askerka’s shirt is torn. He told that during the yesterday’s detention riot policemen were beating him up.

The leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka and an opposition activist Yauhen Akserka are to stand trial in the court of Frunzenski district of Minsk today. The oppositionists were detained yesterday with dozens of other activists near the Russian Embassy in Minsk. They have spent a night in the spci8al detention center in Akrestsyn Street. Hundreds thousands of people all over the world have marked the Day of Belarusian Solidarity on July 16. Thousands of people have come to Embassies of the Russian Federation in their countries and demanded to bring up the Belarusian issue at the G8 summit held in St. Petersburg at the moment, and to stop support of the Belarusian dictatorship by the Russian leadership. In Minsk 40 Belarusian citizens were arrested in Minsk at the attempt to come near the Russian diplomatic mission, many of them were brutally beaten up. Solidarity rallies were held in many Belarusian cities and abroad. In Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Belgium, the USA, Sweden, the Netherlands, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and many other countries of the world pickets and demonstrations were held near Russian and Belarusian Embassies. The Belarusian citizens were lighting candles in their windows as a sign of solidarity with political prisoners and families of abducted oppositionists.
