She asks to find and bring to account the criminals, dispatching such messages.

The USA continues the course of “biased and one-sided of the covering of the situation with human rights in Belarus”, said an official representative of the Foreign Ministry Andrei Papou. Commenting on the report of the US Department of State on the situation with human rights in the world in 2005, A. Papou said that “the US uses the human rights topic unjustifiably as a pretext and instrument of pressure on sovereign states”. “Belarus considers such methods absolutely unacceptable and counterproductive,” A. Papou underlined.

Yesterday former Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus Petras Vaitekunas spent his first day as the Foreign Minister of Lithuania. Despite the busy schedule, Mr. Minister found several minutes to reply to the question of journalists of Radio Svaboda. This is the first interview the new Minister has given to foreign Mass Media.

Kazulin Stays in Valadarsky Street Remand Prison

The former candidate for presidency in Belarus Alyaksandr Kazulin is kept in the same ward as before the trial, Interfax was informed by the head of the penal jurisdiction department of the Interior Ministry of Belarus Uladzimir Kouchur. He said that “Kazulin is to stay in the remand prison until judgment’s entry into legal force”. “It is to happen after 10 days from the moment of delivering judgement or right after passing judgement on an appeal,” he specified.

Southwestern College establishes center for Belorussian studies

Southwestern College, a Winfield-based institution that has three locations in Wichita, has opened a center devoted to Belorussian studies. According to Southwestern officials, this is the first such center in the United States.

Persecution of the chairman of the Union of Poles in Belarus, not recognized by the authorities, continues, Radio Svaboda informs. A police officer Natalya Karandash has informed that a complaint had been lodged against Andzelika Borys for presenting herself as a chairperson of the Union of Poles in Belarus during sessions of the Council of Wspolnota Polska in Warsaw. And police has information that she had been expelled from the UPB.

Kobryn opposition activist fined

Aliaksandr Mekh from Kobryn was fined 31, 000 BYR for distributing leaflets For Freedom. The administrative commission of Kobryn District Executive Committee claimed that the leaflets were published with violations of the legislation and damaged the state’s interests.

UCPB Vitsebsk leader intimidated by RNE

According to Radio Liberty, Alena Zaleskaia, head of the UCPB Vitsebsk office, received a letter from a radical organization Russian National Unity (RNE). The letter says that Zaleskaia is an implacable enemy of the authorities who favor the concept of The Great Russia. The letter also features several Nazism-colored slogans. Zaleskaia was also recommended to leave the opposition otherwise she will face RNE’s actions. Alena Zaleskaia decided to apply to the police, the KGB and the local prosecutor’s office, so that the authors of the letter could be found.

Russian FM Proposes to Exchange BelTransGaz to Cheap Gas

The head of Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov has stated that in setting value for Russian gas for Belarus Russia counts upon mutually beneficial solution based on the actual market situation. “I hope that a solution would be found that reflects the real market situation considering interests of supplying the Belarusian economy with energy products, and at the same time, certainly, meeting interests of the Russian economy,” S. Lavrov said to Kommersant daily on Thursday. He reminded that negotiations with Belarus on this issue have started. They are carried out by Gazprom.

As deputy head of the precautions department, head of the prevention of juvenile delinquency department of the Home Ministry Andrei Saladounikau said Thursday at a press conference in Minsk, the Belarusian Home Ministry is working over a draft of Presidential decree on de-alcoholization of the nation. “The decree is targeted at de-alcoholization of the nation, and it is compared to Gorbachiov’s decree on combating alcoholism,” - the official emphasized.

Book about Violations of Believers’ Rights In Belarus Published

A third issue of the White Book, a collection of materials on monitoring religious situation in Belarus in 2004-2005, has been issued. As the BelaPAN informs, the compiler of the book, a belariusian historian and essay writer Yakau Basin, the book consists of two volumes. The first volume called “Religion and civil society” contains official documents, materials of national and foreign media, scientific articles about life of denominations and religious problems in Belarus. “Most of publications included to the book first appeared in independent printed and electronic mass media. The authorities and state mass media allege that there are no problems concerning believers; rights in Belarus, however the compilation proves the opposite,” Yakau Basin noted.
