Brest Officials Noticed Taxi Drivers Dying From Hunger 13:39, 03/08/2006
The Brest executive committee has been doing and is doing everything possible for an early solution of the problem of taxi drivers on hunger strike. It was told by a deputy chairman of Brest regional executive committee Vyachaslau Myatlitski to the BelaPAN.
“Nobody knows as perfectly as entrepreneurs what Brest regional executive committee had been doing concerning this problem. A vast work has been performed out, the question is being solved at the level of the country. Today another meeting of representatives of the regional executive committee with an initiative group of hunger strikers is to take place. Such meetings are held almost every week,” V. Myatlitski noted.
A termless hunger strike has started in Brest on July 5. Now it has 15 participants. They are owners of taxi shuttles, their relatives, drivers and two vendors of Brest market, who joined the hunger strike as a sign of solidarity. One of the hunger strikers, Lubou Rezanovich, has decalred a dry hunger strike.
Participants of the hunger strike protest against interpretation of the presidential decree number 140 of March 22, 2004 on a republican tax on vehicles imported to the country for commercial purposes. According to it, the decree it applied to the cars imported into the country before the decree was adopted.
