Venezuela to buy air defense system in Belarus? 14:50, 04/08/2006
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez stated that his country would buy a rocket air defence system for rebuffing a possible invasion of foreign troops.
As the Reuters informs, this statement has been made only a few days after Hugo Chavez spent $3 milliard for buying weapons and military equipment in Russia, despite of the US attempts to impose embargo for arms deliveries to Venezuela.
“We shall place an air defense system in Venezuela. It can detect objects at the distance of 200 kilometres and has infra-red guidance missiles,” he said. “We shall defend Venezuela with a shield,” the president said.
However Hugo Chavez has not specified when his country would buy this system, but noted that he saw that weapons in Belarus and Iran during his recent two-week voyage around the world.
Former trooper Hugo Chavez, promising that the socialist revolution would put an end to poverty in Venezuela, occupying the fifth position in the world oil export, spends huge sums for buying weapons, claiming that the US is preparing invasion to Venezuela.
The US has prevented Caracas from buying a helicopter from EADS-CASA, a Spanish firm, and has taken measures to prevent such deals with a Brazilian company Embraer. The US administration charges H. Chavez with close contacts with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, with the aim to destabilize the democracy in the region.
