US Can Impose New Sanctions for Conviction of Partnerstva Activists 12:01, 07/08/2006
The US has condemned the verdict to the activists of the civil initiative of elections observation Partnerstva (Partnership), and warns the official Minsk about possible imposing sanctions against responsible Belarusian officials, stated the Spokesperson of the US Department of State Sean McCormack.
As said by him, the US “condemns the actions of the Belarusian leadership against independent elections observers”. Sean McCormack underlined that the politically motivated trial against Partnerstva “continues a disturbing pattern by the authorities to intimidate civil society activists and to further erode the democratic process in Belarus.” The American leadership does not exclude that moves would be initiated against the officials responsible for the situation in the country.
"We call on the Belarusian authorities to free the Partnership civic activists and all those being held on politically motivated charges," Mr. McCormack said.
