12:31, 11/08/2006

As the human rights center Viasna has found out, the head of Brest regional branch of the Belarusian Popular Front, Yuras Hubarevich, is to be transferred from Byaroza remand prison to Ivatsevichy. The reasons of transfer are unknown.

Mr. Hubarevich was not allowed to receive food parcels from his family, saying that he is arrested not under the Criminal Code article, but according to the Administrative Code. Hubarevich’s wife challenged these actions in Byaroza prosecutor’s office.

Yesterday workers of Byaroza remand prison were given an instruction of the Internal Affairs Ministry. It contains a rule that prisoners have a right to receive sanitary articles and food from their family members. Today it has been allowed to bring food.

As we have informed, on August 8 the court of Byaroza district of Brest region sentenced the chairman of Brest regional branch of the Belarusian Popular Front Party Yury Hubarevich to 10 days of administrative arrest for using unregistered symbols during a culture event.

Policemen drew up a report last week, during a walking tour of democratic youth “Crusade of good will-2006”, when participants of the movement “Za svabodu!” (“For Freedom!”). Judge Vadzim Mazol agreed to policemen’s explanation that raising a white-red-white flag on a motor boat is a violation of the law.
