Alyaksandr Shalajka Transferred to a Ward with Worse Conditions 16:29, 11/08/2006
After the verdict was passed to an activist of the civil initiative of elections observation “Partnerstva” (“Partnership”) Alyaksandr Shalajka, he was transferred to another ward of the remand prison in Valadarski Street. Incarceration conditions in that ward are much worse. The Charter’97 press center has been informed about that by a lawyer of Alyaksandr Shalajka, Vera Stramkouskaya.
“Shalajka was transferred to the ward for the convicted. It is situated in a basement; there are no windows there, the ward is really airless. Alyaksandr has a weak heart, and he feels worse,” Vera Stramkouskayay said.
As said by the lawyer, 10 more prisoners are kept in the ward except Alyaksandr Shalajka.
On August 4 the court of Tsentralny district of Minsk sentenced Alyaksandr Shalajka to 6 months of imprisonment. He had been found guilty of taking part in an unregistered group that infringed citizens’ rights. The human rights activist is to be released on August 21.
