US Fight Corruption by Lukashenka’s Example 13:44, 11/08/2006
George Bush has announced a “national strategy” of uncovering and seizing in foreign countries stolen funds of corrupt high-level government officials. “Our objective is to defeat high-level public corruption in all its forms and to deny corrupt officials access to the international financial system as a means of defrauding their people and hiding their ill-gotten gains,” President Bush said in an August 10 statement.
Under Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Josette Shiner said that sanctions imposed on Belarusian dictator Alyaksandr Lukashenka and his family could serve an example of such actions.
Undersecretary of State Josette Shiner said the aim is to identify, isolate and punish those involved in corrupt government practices.
“The critical tools will be denying physical and financial safe-haven to corrupt officials,” she said. “We will prevent them from laundering their ill-gotten proceeds, bring to justice those who bribe foreign officials, and identify, recover and return to the people of these countries the stolen assets that belong to them”.
