The Cardigans: Long Live Belarus! 17:40, 28/08/2006
It has been an unusual concert for Minsk, though organizers of “Estrella star show” held on August 27, were exaggerating its importance calling it a world class festival. “Uma2rman” and “Gorod 312” are certainly Russian stars, but not international ones. However, it’s our national trait to exaggerate the importance of events because there are not many of them, “Belorusskie Novosti” writes.
The most brilliant ideas of the “star-show” were the choice of the stage and invitation of “The Cardigans”. The take-off strip of the airport Minsk-1 is a good idea of a stage for the concert. Organizers even managed to transfer a few flights to Minsk-2 airport. It is great for an open-air rock-festival to be held with lots of space and sky around.
“We have been planning for “Estrella star show” to become a festival unheard-of in Belarus,” told the coordinator of the project, a representative of Moscow producers center Alexei Rusak. “But we wanted to avoid an ordinary concert on a stadium Dinamo. We wanted chic. We have chosen the airport, and were satisfied with the result. There were some technical problems. But they were insignificant. IN the near future we would consider holding an annual rock-festival in Belarus”.
Yesterday 7-8 thousand viewers were present at the concert, and they are sure to support organizers in their wish to continue such shows every year. But events of such level depend not only on producers’ work, money and wish of musicians, but on good will of bureaucrats. And advisability of one more festival could have raised doubts.
Firstly, the viewers haven’t appreciated the immense support of the presidential administration to the concert, and every announcement about this support was met with a disapproving buzz of voices. Secondly, the stars of the festival appeared to be ideologically unaware. The soloist of The Cardigans, Nina Persson wished goodbye to Minsk public in Belarusian, saying “Long Live Belarus!” The spectators were euphoric and utterly shocked…
