Police Watched Football Match “For Freedom and Independence”
14:29, 28/08/2006

On August 27 an attempt to prevent members of the youth organization of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) to hold a football tournament “For Freedom and Independence” was made. A van and reinforcement metal parts were placed on the playing field of Vavilov factory stadium making impossible to play there. When football players came to a stadium, policemen were waiting for them.

It was decided to hold the match at the stadium in Zakharov Street. Teams of the “BPF Youth”, Yakub Kolas Lyceum, “The Young Front”, “The Free Youth”, Belarusian National Technical University “Zdarouje” and others have taken part in the tournament. In a hot contest the team “Zdarouje” was the winner of the Cup of Freedom and Independence.

However, there were more problems to come. During the break before the final game a policeman came to the field. He hadn’t explained anything. He snatched a streamer “For Freedom and Independence” from the railing. He said: “These words are aimed against our authorities”. After that a police car with two more policemen arrived. They seized a camera of one of the participants and a streamer.

Two members of the Belarusian Popular Front Youth came to the police department to get back the camera. After three hours in the police department, they were released and given back the camera. Policemen refused to draw up a report for seizing the streamer.
