Punitive Psychiatry Returns to Belarus

Pavel Yazerski (Ezersky), an activist of the United Civil Party, was taken from a police department to a mental hospital, where he stayed for 10 days. He was given unknown injections and pills. Hrodna regional branch pf the United Civil Party is preparing a statement to the prosecutor’s office demanding to bring up a criminal action against doctors of the local mental hospital. According to Deutsche Welle, Russian psychiatrists have come to a conclusion that treatment inappropriate to the state of his health had been provided to him.

Today at 2.30 p.m. the chairman of Brest regional branch of social-democratic party of Alyaksandr Kazulin, Ihar Maslouski, and former chairman of Brest regional branch Ryhor Rutski, who were on their way to Kyiv, were got off the train.

Since August 25 a poster with the words “Hunger strike” has appeared on the balcony of Valery Baranouski. Baranouski, 56, has been charged with illegal business activities, sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment with suspended execution of sentence for a year and a half, and compelled him to pay a fine of 12,000 UDS. The entrepreneur challenges the verdict and the institution of a criminal action against him.

In the near future people who does not belong to opposition, but people ardently supporting Lukashenka could stand trial in the court of Leninski district of Brest, Russian “Gazeta” informs. However, the Department of citizenship and migration of Internal Affairs Ministry of Belarus refuses to comment the incident with the Belarusian Republican Youth Union officially. An officer of one of departments anonymously told to “Gazeta” that they have been ordered by higher authorities not to reveal violations in the BRYU.

Case Filed Against Newspaper of Oppositional Communists

The assault on the Party of Communists of Belarus goes on from all directions. As the Charter’97 press center has found out, a suit of defense of honour and dignity against the newspaper of the Party, “Tovarisch”, has been filed. The case has been filed by a chairman of the association “Stolichnoe taxi” Ihar Verkhavets. The newspaper and a trade union activist Pavel Paddubski are to be a defendant in the court. He has told to the newspaper about the problems of Minsk taxi drivers many of whom can lose their job in the near future.

A Lithuania’s State Security Directorate (VSD) officer, an adviser at the Lithuanian consulate general in Hrodna Vytautas Pociunas could have been poisoned, the Lietuvos rytas writes on Tuesday.
