European Parliament to Take Part In Investigation of Lithuanian Diplomat In Minsk 11:49, 30/08/2006
The European Parliament members from Poland and Lithuania insist on investigation of incidents in Belarus, in which diplomats of those countries died, Interfax informs. “The chairman of the delegation of the European Parliament on ties with Belarus, Bogdan Klich (Poland) and European parliamentarian Vitautas Landsbergis (Lithuania) have called upon the Council of the European Union to react promptly and strongly to repeating invectives against foreign diplomats in Belarus,” the press service of the European Parliament informs.
“It may well be true that we are witnessing systematic harsh actions,” V. Landsbergis stated.
Besides, the delegates offered to give the leader of the Belarusian opposition Alyaksandr Milinkevich, who ran for presidency in Belarus, Andrei Sakharov Prize, which is given by the European Parliament for merits in the sphere of human rights defence.
Last week in a result of an accident a Lithuania’s State Security Directorate (VSD) officer, an adviser at the Lithuanian consulate general in Hrodna Vytautas Pociunas died in Brest.
The Belarusian side has carried out a preliminary investigation according to which the diplomat had fallen out of the hotel window on the 8th floor. The law-enforcing agencies of Belarus inform that a criminal action has not been brought up on the fact of Lithuanian diplomat’s death in Brest because of absence of reasons for that.
