Journalists Detained in Babrujsk Released 16:53, 31/08/2006
Journalists that have been detained in Babrujsk today are released without a police report being drawn up. The Charter’97 press center has been told about that by a photographer of the newspaper “Nasha Niva” Yuliya Darashkevich. The journalists have been given back their IDs and all equipment. As we have informed, today during a protest in Babrujsk reporters Halina Abakunchyk (Radio Svaboda), Syarhei Pulsha (the BelaPAN news agency), a press photographer of the Nasha Niva Yuliya Darashkevich, Alena Yakzhyk (Salidarnasts), journalists of the newspaper Navinki Pauluk Kanavalchyk, Uladzislau Pyatnitsa and Katsyryna Herasimava, two correspondents of the “Bobrujskiy Kuryer” and two citizens of Russia: a reporter of an internet-portal Indimedia, Anastasia Nekazakova and Evgeniy Schetov.
A deputy of the city council Ales Chyhir is still kept in Babrujsk city police department. As we have informed, on August 31 in the noon Ales Chyhir held a protest in the held a protest in the central square of Babrujsk. He symbolically chained himself to a lamppost, protesting against violations of constitutional norms, in particular, of his right to labour. As said by Chyhir, the educational department of Babrujsk city executive committee hadn’t prolonged a contract with him. Chyhir had been working as a history teacher for 13 years.
During the arrest policemen acted harshly and injured his arm.
