Young Activist Detained in Salihorsk (Photo) 18:28, 31/08/2006
Salihorsk young people continued dissemination of information about the hunger strike announced by a citizen of the city Valer Baranouski. However, policemen are ill-disposed towards informational leaflets. As a result of that an activist of the Young Front Ivan Shyla has been detained today.
Policemen were treating Ivan Shyla cruelly. He was insulted and intimidated. In the police department violence was used against him. His friends came to the police department to support him. They were asked to enter the building, and information about them was written down.
In a few hours the activist was released. His mother Svyatlana Shyla has written a complaint to the head of police department.
“The regime fears transparency. Local mass media do not inform about the hunger strike. That is why we are carrying out our campaign of informing the population. As for policemen’s behaviour, it’s a usual thing in our country. The law-enforcing agencies are a means of intimidating young activists of the democratic movement. I do not think that the complaint would change anything. We wrote a complaint a month ago, and the prosecutor’s office answered with some run-around,” Ivan Shyla said.
