An Activist of Union of Poles in Belarus Faces Arrest 15:46, 25/09/2006
A deputy chairman of Hrodna regional court Alyaksandr Korzun has discharge a court order of the court of Kastrychnitski district of Hrodna on termination of case against an activist of the Union of Poles in Belarus Meczyslaw Jaskewicz. He Charter’97 press center was informed about that by the lawyer of the UPB activist Uladzimir Kiselevich. As we have informed, Meczyslaw Jaskevicz had been charged with commitment of a “petty hooliganism” for allegedly hindering work of an operator if Hrodna regional TV who was shooting an event of the UPB on the Day of Polish Troops. In August the court ruled to terminate the case against Jaskewicz for absence of crime in the act.
On August 15 representatives of General Consulate of Poland and activists of the Union of Poles in Belarus laid flowers to tombs of Polish soldiers at Hrodna Military cemetery. The ritual was videofilmed by a man in mufti. When he was asked to present himself, he refused. The UPB activists Andrzej Poczobutt and Meczyslaw Jaskevicz decide that he was a policeman (as police films opposition rallies in the same manner) turned their backs to the cameraman so that he couldn’t film the ceremony. It was considered to be a hooliganism.
An activist of the UBP Andrzej Poczobutt was found guilty and sentenced to 10 daysof arrest.
Meczyslaw Jaskevicz is to appear in the court of Kastrychnitski district of Hrodna tomorrow, at 2.30 p.m.
