Zmitser Dashkevich: Letters from “Valadarka” 18:12, 25/09/2006
On September 23 members and fellow-fighters of the “Young Front” leader Zmitser Dashkevich got his first letters from the remand prison in Valadarski street in Minsk, under date of September 19.
“Hi, friends!
Everything is fine with me, I am getting used to the orderly pace of life in Valadarski Street. It is bad that I got here in the weekend, that is why I had to sit in a “cesspool” for three days. It is a cell like a transhipment base which people are placed before being placed to “Valadarka”. 25 persons are sitting in an apartment of 12 square meters. We were sleeping when seated for three nights. It was impossible to see the opposite wall because of the smoke of cigarettes. I was the only one non-smoker.
Today I was placed to the cell number 92. It is more cheery here. There are 16 berths and 21 prisoners. The “leader” in the cell is a young guy, about 27. I am getting used to it little by little. As our brother Finkevich said, “It’s all rats’ race”.
It’s certainly a difficult time, time of trial. The future of the Young Front and of the Belarusian youth would depend on how we would come through this time. I am more than sure that in case our activities would be banned, many of them would unite”.
Zmitser wrote in one of the letters that he had been expecting such turn of events, though he hadn’t been expecting to be imprisoned so quickly, Nasha Niva informs.
