Belarusian Protestants Lodged a Complaint against Minsk Authorities

Parishioners of the New Life Church have lodged a complaint to the Supreme Court of Belarus against the authorities of Minsk that demand to vacate the building of the church. Protesting against the ruling of Minsk city executive committee, 153 persons went on hunger strike on October 6. They stay in the building of the church transformed into a place for worship.

Russia, Belarus to sign agreement on joint air defense system

Russia and Belarus will sign an agreement in the near future on forming a unified air defense system, the Russian Air Force commander said Thursday.

Policeman Broke Nose to Activist in Baranavichy

On October 16 in Baranavichy during a solidarity action one of policemen brutally beat up a young activist Zmitser Palojka. A camera, a purse with 50,000 BYR and some personal things were seized from him without making an inventory. As informed by the human rights center “Viasna”, on October 18 a medicolegal investigation showed that Zmitser Palojka’s nose had been broken and a bone dislocated.

Babruisk Hunger Striker Can’t Use Telephone

Foreign Minister of Belarus Goes to Iran

A wide range of issues relating cooperation between Belarus and Iran is to be considered during the visit of Foreign Affairs Minister of Belarus Syarhei Martynau to Teheran on October 21-24. As informed by a press secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Andrei Papou at a news conference today, meetings of Syarhei Martynau with Iranian President, foreign affairs and trade ministers are planned during the visit. Negotiations in the Trade, Industry and Mining Chamber of Iran are planned.

Construction of nuclear power station can be launched in 2007

Works for construction of a nuclear power station in Belarus can be started in 2007. It is envisaged by a draft program of innovation development of Belarus in 2006-2010, told the head of the National Academy of Science Mikhail Myasnikovich on October 19 in Minsk, an international scientific conference “Problems of forecasting and governmental regulation of social and economic development”.

5 Trade Union Activists Announced Hunger Strike

Today, on October 19, a statement has been made that 4 more members of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union (BITU) are joining the hunger strike of an electrician of a joint stock company “Belshyna” Alena Zakhodzhaya. On October 16 a chairman of the primary organization of BITU of a joint stock company “Belshyna” Ryhor Spasiuk circulated a letter informing that several trade union members would join the hunger strike.

Zmitser Dashkevich to Stand Trial on October 30

The case of one of the leaders of the “Young Front” organization, Zmitser Dashkevich, is to be considered in the court of Kastrychnitski district of Minsk on October 30. The Charter’97 press center was informed about that by a youth leader Artur Finkevich. The case is to be tried by judge Ala Bulash. Zmitser Dashkevich is charged with participation in activities of an unregistered organization. He faces up to two years of imprisonment.
