Special rapporteur expresses deep concern over deteriorating health of Alexander Kazulin 18:38, 08/12/2006

The Following statement was issued by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, Adrian Severin. 
Alyaksandr Kazulin Addresses UN, Countries Leaders and Democratic Forces of Belarus 18:35, 08/12/2006

The former presidential candidate, a political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin, sent an address to the democratic forces of Belarus, and to leaders of European and world powers, to the UN Secretary General and to the European Commission. As we have informed, the politician continues a hunger strike in the corrective labour colony “Vitsba-3”, demanding to consider the situation in Belarus in the UN Security Council. 
Action of Solidarity with Alyaksandr Kazulin to Take Place on December 10 in Minsk 17:55, 08/12/2006

The Political Council of the United democratic forces of Belarus has passed a decision to satge an action of solidarity with Alyaksandr Kazulin and other political prisoners on December 10, on the International Day of Human Rights Defence. Leaders of democratic parties have called upon citizens to come to Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk, on December 10, at 2 p.m.

Border Guards Refuse to Give Back Milinkevich Jr.’s Passport 15:54, 08/12/2006

Today a son of the leader of the united democratic forces of Belarus, Alyaksandr Milinkevich Jr., came to the Department of frontier crossing points. The State Committee of border-security forces’ representatives promised him that his passport seized on November 29 would be given back to him. However, instead of that, the son of the politician was interrogated for 2 hours. Border guards where interested how his passport turned out to be in his father’s pocket. 
Strike at Footwear Factory “Red October” 15:25, 08/12/2006

Having received their pay slips, workers of “Red October” (“Chyrvony Kastrychnik”) shoe factory saw that their salaries for the last month have reduced at about Br 100,000. It was the main reason for today’s strike, Radio Svaboda informs. Workers complain about bad working conditions: they do not have a lunch break; sometimes they have to work on weekends. 
Lukashenka: “If Gorbachov Gave a Command, KGB Would Arrested Everybody” 13:09, 08/12/2006

Yesterday the Belarusian TV transmitted an interview of Alyaksandr Lukashenka to Russian TV Channel NTV. The interview was recorded on September 11 for a programme dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the USSR collapse and creation of the CIS. This time Lukashenka stated that the chairman of the Supreme Soviet Stanislau Shushkevich didn’t have a right to sign the Belavezha Accords, and that if in December 1991 Mikhail Gorbachov called to Minsk, the Belarusian KGB would arrest Yeltsin, Kravchuk and Shushkevich. 
Alyaksandr Kazulin Promises to Think Over Hunger Strike 11:25, 08/12/2006

Today, on the 50th day of a hunger strike, an administration of the penal colony No.3 in Vitsebsk allowed the former presidential elections in Belarus, a political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin to speak on the phone wit his wife. Iryna Kazulina told to the Charter’97 press center that during the conversation wit her husband, she informed him about the moves of the Belarusian opposition for Kazulin’s demands realization. In particular, the Political Council of the United Democratic Forces addressed the UN Security Council with an appeal to consider the Belarusian question, and adopted an address to Belarusian Prime Minister Syarhei Sidorski with a call to take upon himself a temporary discharge of duty of the leader of the state, as Alyaksandr Lukashenka occupies the position of a president illegally. 
500 Persons to Participate in Action of Solidarity with Alyaksandr Kazulin 10:55, 08/12/2006

On December 8, on the 50th day of a political hunger strike of the former candidate for presidency, a political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin, his supporters are announcing a mass hunger strike of solidarity. As the press-service of the former presidential candidate, members of Minsk branch of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Hramada), members of political parties from all regions of Belarus, and Minsk headquarters of united democratic forces are to take part in the protest. Well-known politicians are to join the protest: Viktar Ivashkevich, Alena Skryhan, Valyantsina Palevikova, a trade union leader Henadz Fyadynich, a chairman of the Union of Belarusian writers Ales Pashkevich, daughters of Alyaksandr Kazulin Volha and Yuliya. An activist of the United Civil Party Krystsina Shatsikava stated that she would continue the hunger strike for 7 days. 
50 Days of Kazulin’s Hunger Strike. Opposition Leaders Addressed Prime Minister 10:20, 08/12/2006

Leaders of the united opposition addressed an open letter to the Prime Minister of Belarus Syarhei Sidorski. Thus politicians have fulfilled the demand of the former presidential candidate of Belarus, a political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin, who continues his hunger strike in Vitsebsk colony for the 50th day. Opposition leaders write that Alyaksandr Kazulin, who carries out a political hunger strike in the colony, on September 20 called upon Syarhei Sidorski to take upon himself a temporary discharge of duty of the leader of the state, under the Constitution, and to schedule repeat election of the president of Belarus, as Alyaksandr Lukashenka occupies the position of a president illegally. However Syarhei Sidorski still hasn’t answered the appeal of A. Kazulin.
