Andrei Sannikov: "Belarusian Regime Should Expect Imposition of Other Sanctions"
17:41, 21/12/2006

"The European Union has long ago defined the principles of cooperation with states, not only with Belarus. One should remember that the EU is a community of democratic states, who are first of all are interested in support of democracy principles and of human rights. That is why one shouldn’t expect that relations with countries where these principles are violated would be based on some shadow or illegal schemes. Belarusian authorities have been told time and again that such moves would be made if violations of rights of trade unions and of workers continue. Europe has been waiting long for any reaction to numerous warnings, but the situation in Belarus in this area was getting worse. So evicting Belarus from the Generalized System of Preferences should be viewed as a long overdue decision. The Belarusian regime is to expect imposing of other sanctions in trade and economy, as today glaring violations of human rights violations in Belarus are obvious for everyone," told the international coordinator of the Charter’97 press center, a former deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Andrei Sannikov, commenting on the decision of the European Union to withdraw trade preferences from Belarus.
