Boos Doesn’t Think Belarus Would Shut Off Gas For Kaliningrad 12:58, 26/12/2006
Kaliningrad governor Georgy Boos does not expect “any troubles on the part of Belarus” in connection with the problem of gas deliveries problem to that country which hasn’t been settled”.
On Tuesday in an interview to Interfax he expressed confidence that the gas problem “would be solved eventually”.
G. Boos said that he does not expect any difficulties for his region.
As we have informed, today Kommersant has informed that this time Gazprom is better prepared for shutting off gas for Belarus. Belarus was shut off from the gas supply in 2004 and the monopoly is well aware of the consequences of the move. At that time, Minsk (as Kiev did this January) used gas intended for Kaliningrad Region, Lithuania and Poland for its own needs. This year, Kommersant has learned, Gazprom pumped extra gas into underground reservoirs in Germany (for use by Poland) and the Baltic countries. That is, the monopoly prepared for this turn of events without officially acknowledging the seriousness of the problem.
