Justice Ministry Issued Warning to Communist Party of Belarus
18:21, 09/01/2007

Justice Ministry of Belarus has finished an audit of activities of the Party of Communists of Belarus (PCB), including the check of its members’ number and whether it conforms to requirements of the law. The membership of at least 1,300 members has been confirmed in the check of the Justice Ministry, which in general corresponds with the legislation requirements on a minimal number of political party members. But Justice Ministry states that for 200 persons on the list the membership in the party hasn’t been confirmed. That is why an official warning has been issued to the party of Communists of Belarus, and a term given for curing breaches.

The Central Committee of the PCB has been warned that in case the shortcomings would not be amended before February 5, the further existence of the party is to be out into question.

The PCB press secretary Syarhei Vaznyak told to the Charter’97 press center that the claims of the Justice Ministry are not lawful, as “the ministry hadn’t been carrying out a legal examination of the party activities”.

“Police, prosecutor’s office, KGB, workers of house administration who had been intimidating party members and exerted pressure on them, have been carrying out the check instead of ministry workers. No wonder that many party members refused to talk to KGB officers or policemen, or denied their membership in this examination,” Syarhei Vaznyak said.

The Party of the Communists of Belarus is set to challenge the official warning of Justice ministyr in the court.
