Opposition candidates continue withdrawing from elections in Mogilyov 12:40, 11/01/2007
Opposition candidates in Mogilyov continued pulling out of local elections, which began in Belarus on January 9.
Yury Doroshenko, a member of the Independent Union of Electronic and Other Industries Union, became at least the fourth opposition candidate to withdraw from the poll in the city in eastern Belarus.
"Our people were barred from election commissions," the activist told BelaPAN. "They were constantly creating obstacles for us. My speech broadcast by a radio station became the final point of my campaign, after which I informed the city and regional election commissions about my decision to pull out. There`s no sense in continuing taking part in the elections. It`s already clear who will win the seat."
Other members of the trade union, Aleksandr Korolyov and Vladimir Tuzov, and Belarusian Popular Front member Dmitry Solovyov withdrew from the elections in Mogilyov earlier this month.
In Bobruisk, a city in the Mogilyov region, two members of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party "Hramada," Taisiya Kabanchuk and Nadezhda Grinevitskaya, have also bowed out of the elections.
