Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, welcomes the agreement between 11:26, 16/01/2007
Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy
(CFSP), issued the following statement in response to the agreement reached last night
between the governments of Russia and Belarus on oil transit through Belarus:
"I welcome the agreement reached between Russia and Belarus. This is good news for both countries and for the European Union.
I have been in touch with both sides during the negotiations and encouraged them to find an early solution that would avoid a negative impact on oil supplies to the European Union. I am glad that an agreement has now been found.
Nevertheless, the interruption of oil supplies, which affected several EU Member States, points to the need for a better understanding between the European Union and Russia on the basic principles of a future energy partnership."
