President Adamkus wishes success to new Lithuanian ambassador to Belarus 12:53, 17/01/2007
Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus on January 15 received the newly appointed Lithuanian ambassador to Belarus, Edminas Bagdonas, to hand him credentials to be presented to Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko, told BelaPAN.
Mr. Adamkus wished the ambassador success in representing Lithuania in the neighboring country, according to the Lithuanian president`s press office.
"Ongoing political processes in Belarus are important for the entire democratic community," the press office quoted him as saying. "Lithuania, continuing its policy of good-neighborly relations and supporting the development of civil society in Belarus, is responsible to its partners in the region and the European Union, as well as to the whole international community."
The post of Lithuania`s ambassador to Belarus has been vacant since Petras Vaitiekunas took over as foreign minister this past July.
Mr. Bagdonas is a career diplomat. His professional career has included service as foreign affairs adviser to President Adamkus and ambassador to Italy.
