Secretary general of German ruling party expresses criticism of Belarus` human rights record

The secretary general of Germany`s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Ronald Pofalla, expressed criticism of Belarus` human rights record. In an interview with BelaPAN, he said that the CDU was concerned about what he called flagrant violations of human rights, the lack of freedom of expression and the conviction of political dissidents on politically motivated charges in the country.

Young Leader Ales Kalita Detained at Border

Today at 7.10 a.m. the chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front party’s Youth Council Ales Kalita was taken off a train when he was on a way to Vilnius. At a border station Gudagaj border guards confiscated Ales Kalita’s notebook and a flash-card.

Syarzhuk Huminski’s Case Closed

A criminal case against an activist of the Young Front Syarzhuk Huminski has been closed due to lack of evidence. On Thursday the Young Front activist was summoned to a police department of Vorsha. He was informed that a criminal action for making graffiti “Freedom to political prisoners”, “Freedom to Dashkevich”, “long live Belarus” and others had been stopped.

Regional structures refuse free press distribution

In Nyasvizh (Mink region) a local department of the Minsk regional press distribution union has refused to distribute the “Nyasvizhsky chas” regional newspaper through its newspaper stalls.

KGB refuses to return passport of a leader of the UCP

Igar Shinkarik, deputy head of the united Civil party could not leave for Lithuania on January 24. At the department on citizenship and migration of the Partizansky district division for internal affairs of Minsk he was informed that his passport had been with KGB.

Ministry of justice is not in a hurry with registering the Union of Left Parties

Ministry of justice of Belarus asked for additional documents with regard to the foundation conference of the Union of left parties which was held in Chernigov on December 17. A corresponding letter signed by head of the department of public associations and political parties of the ministry of justice Aleg Slizheusky was received at the office of the Party of Communists Belarusian. This message was conveyed to the BelaPan by spokesman of the Party of Communists Belarusian Syargei Vaznyak.
