Members of independent trade unions dimissed from state-owned enterprises
15:44, 31/01/2007

Management of the Unitary Enterprise “Lyos” (Baran city) decided to get rid of a free trade union by dismissing its activists. Yesterday, on 30 January, four members of the Free Trade Union of Metalworkers (SPM) have received the notice that since 1 March 2007 they would be dismissed based on expiry of the term of their contracts.

As the SPM Chairperson Vasiliy Levchenkov informed, all candidates for dismissal are workers with high skills, who do not have any reprimands or penalties. The trade union organization is sure that the management wants to dismiss them because of trade union membership with the SPM. “The management at all does not hide this, and tells people that the notice is not yet a dismissal, but you know what is required from you”, - Vasiliy Levchenkov noted.

He informed, that in addition to the SPM members - Sergey Makasevich, a leading engineer of the scheme and technical department No 3, Tatyana Kabarikha and Tatyana Khokhlova, engineers of the same department and Victor Hrapovitsky, a leading engineer of the scheme and technical department No 2, one more worker, who had problems with alcohol also received the notice. The SPM leader expressed his indignation: “However, today he has gone to a treatment facility, was coded [against alcohol] and he was left alone”.

The trade union filed the director an official protest against discrimination of the SPM members based on the trade union principle. Today, on 31 January 2007, Alexander Yaroshuk, the Chairperson of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions would raise this issue at session of the National Council on Labor and Social Issues. Vasiliy Levchenkov stated: “I am confident that the director wants to get rid of the SPM members and do away with our organization. Otherwise I do not see any logic in his decisions. Sergey Makasevich is a young specialist and in literal sense he is an irreplaceable worker. Management never had any claims or penalties related to work of the others. By the way, all this happens against a background when the Government recently made declarations that it implements Recommendations of the International Labor Organization, aimed at elimination of violations of independent trade unions’ rights”.
