Do Prisoners Sleep in Corridors? 13:23, 02/02/2007
A reader called to the editorial office of the newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda”: “In the colony in Navapolatsk people are sleeping in corridors, there are not enough beds in the wards. Those who are quieter, for instance those who had been convicted for economic crimes, are allowed to sleep in the corridor…”
Journalists called the colony No.10 in Navapolatsk.
“Indeed, the number of prisoners has been exceeded the limit by about 500 inmates,” representatives of the colony admitted. “But all of them have sleeping accommodations! We have had some problems, but we put additional berths in sleeping areas. When we have a renovation done by inmates themselves, they sleep in other parts of the prison or in “len-rooms”…
- Do you mean Lenin rooms?
- Yes, I mean no, they are rooms of educational work. TV-sets and newspapers are kept there. Sometimes people slept there. But everything is alright now!
- You mean, there are no people sleeping in corridors?
- There are prisoners in the corridors at night. They are night orderlies. They sleep at daytime, and are in corridors at night. But they are not sleeping, they maintain the order. They are paid money for that! They have a kind of a watch post in the corridor: a chair and a table.
