U.S. Ambassador hopes that detained activists would be released :: Charter'97 :: News

U.S. Ambassador to Belarus Karen Stewart hopes that Young Front activists detained in Minsk will be released in the near future. He said about that to journalists at the opening ceremony of Minsk International book fair.

Detention of the activists caused her deep concern, the diplomat said. She noted that the U.S. Embassy is to continue urging to respect the rights of detainees and to treat them in a proper way.

As we have informed, 27 activists of the Young Front were detained on February 4 in the evening at a private apartment in Minsk. They were taking part in a session of the central council of the organization. The activists were detained by riot policemen. They were taken to a police department of Savetski district of Minsk. After 7 hours when reports were drawn up, all except Zmitser Fedaruk were released. On the same day Aleh Korban, an activist of the Young Front, was arrested in his apartment. A criminal action has been brought up against Aleh Korban and Zmitser Fedaruk on charges related to Article 193 Part 1 – “activities on behalf on an unregistered organization”.
