Milinkevich: Regime Should Give Answer to Proposals of EU and Opposition 12:14, 09/02/2007
“Meetings in Brussels have once again clearly demonstrated that European politicians do not want to abandon the path chosen by the European Commission to establish cooperation and mend relations between Europe and Belarus. But Lukashenka should make the first step to meet,” Alyakszandr Milinkevich said, summing up the results of his yesterday visit to Brussels.
“The fact that one of the last dictatorships in the world is situated on the Eastern border of the EU, is considered unacceptable by Europe. Lukashenka is to make a definite choice, to demonstrate his support to proposals of the European Commission and give answer to the recent initiatives of the opposition. However, the predictable results of local elections, and criminal actions against activists of the Young Front cannot be approved of naturally as evidence of Lukashenka’s regime readiness for economic and political cooperation,” Alyaksandr Milinkevich.
The leader of the united democratic forces of Belarus has also emphasized that during the meetings he managed to reach a concrete agreement on further European support of projects aimed at development of independent TV and radio broadcasting for Belarus, and educational projects for Belarusian students. According to Alyaksandr Milinkevich, Europe understands sensibleness of such actions, and admit its role in mobilization of civil society.
The leader of the united democratic forces Alyaksandr Milinkevich was on a one-day visit to Brussels on February 8. He had a number of meetings with the leadership of the European Parliament: a new chair of the European parliament Hans-Gerd Poettering, Chairman of the European parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Jacek Saryusz Wolski and Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group.
