Alexander Rar: Lukashenka is sending the final threatening message to Moscow 17:19, 09/02/2007
“Lukashenka is not actually willing to be accepted in the West but is going to make another arrangement with Russia. And his pro-Western reverences should be treated like the final threatening message to Moscow”, this opinion was expressed by expert of the German council on foreign policy Alexander Rar in his interview with the Rossiyskaya gazeta 9 February.
“He wants to prove that he and his country have the alternative, i.e., the Western direction, which he will chose if Russia stops supporting Belarus”, the political scientist considers.
“The political philosophy of Lukashenka is very simple”, supposes A. Rar. “It’s a moral duty of stronger and wealthier Russian people to provide for a junior brother- the Belarusian people, who will thankfully support Russia at the big political arena in its international initiatives and it will be the Russia’s outpost in case of its clash with the West”.
“Lukashenka is also sure”, a political scientists assumes, “that ”junior” people of Belarus, who have never openly confronted Russia, have historical ties with Russians and suffered in the World War II, deservers that Russia have treated Belarus as a part of its economy and haven’t raised prices for power resources”.
“Lukashenka is cross with the Russian authorities and considers that they have betrayed his moral assumptions which he considered historically justified”, A. Rar said.
According to him, the attitude to the Lukashenka’s latest declaration is ambiguous in the West. ”Many experts consider that he has got into a trap. Russia, which is going to develop its relations with the CIS countries on the market basis, will cease supporting him one way or another. That is why Lukashenka has nothing to do but to knock at the door to the West to get the support from there. The same analysts stress that the Lukashenka’s first step to be accepted in the West is to open the economy for Western investors. It will arouse a certain confidence to his pro-Western orientation”, A. Rar declared.
