Uladzimir Kobets: "It`s Milinkevich Who Gives Momentum to Political Developments Today"
17:07, 15/02/2007

“Alyaksandr Milinkevich is a non-party man. That is why his refusal to take part in a party event is absolutely logical. Today Milinkevich is an absolute leader of the civil society, his influence in high both in Belarus and abroad. It’s Milinkevich who gives momentum to political developments in the country. For instance, take his open letter to Lukashenka. It’s a strong move of a serious politician, which can bring about concrete results,” told a youth leader Uladzimir Kobets to the Chater’97 press-center, commenting the decision of Alyaksandr Milinkevich not to take part in the Congress of the democratic forces.

As said by Uladzimir Kobets, the Congress of the democratic forces which took place before the presidential elections had specific goals, and in particular to choose a singe candidate of the democratic forces in the election.

“The Congress has served to consolidation of all democratic forces, and in fact was a start of Alyaksandr Milinkevich’s campaign. Undoubtedly, the role of political parties in that was great. But the election has passed, and Alyaksandr Milinkevich is not a candidate any more,” the youth leader said. “In the new situation the upcoming congress looks like a purely party event which provokes little interest in the society. The goals of this even are not clear either. Scandals that accompanied preparation to the Congress do not give assurance that this meeting would contribute to cohesion of the democratic forces. I know that most young activists support this move of Alyaksandr Milinkevich and lay on him their hopes for changes in the country”.
