Belarusian Young People Gathered in Streets of Minsk with Candles (Photo) 20:14, 16/02/2007
150 young activists have marched with lit candles along Skaryna (Nezalezhnastsi) Avenue in Minsk today. in this way young activists have expressed their solidarity with political prisoners and families of abducted oppositionists.
Participants of the rally started to gather at 6 p.m. near Maxim Gorky Park. Riot policemen and policemen in plainclothes were expecting for them already. Policemen demanded young people to disband. They started to seize candles out of participants’ hands roughly. Then participants of the rally went along Skaryna Avenue towards Yanka Kupala Park. They placed candles under the monument of the poet.
Riot policemen were accompanying young activists all the time. In Yanka Kupala Square, when people placed candles on the ground, they started to tramp on them. However, none of the participants of the rally has been detained.
According to reports, candles of solidarity were lit in other parts of the city as well.
