Yatsek Sariush-Volsky: «Now it is the Belarusian government to make a step forward»
15:05, 19/02/2007

Head of the European Parliament’s committee on international relations Yatsek Sariush-Volsky considers that today Belarus faces the alternative- ”a rather seducing offer of help on the part of the European commission as soon as the of the country’s democratization begins and the Russia’s political and energy pressure. The democratic opposition and Belarusian youth have chosen Europe. Now it is the Belarusian government to make its decision. It has not simply to declare its readiness to cooperate with Europe but to start the democratization of the power institutions”, stressed Yatsek Sariush-Volsky in his interview with the BelaPAN’s correspondent.

Head of the European Parliament’s delegation on links with Belarus Bogdan Klikh considers that cooperation between Belarus and Europe must be developing. “It is essential for us not to close the “European doors” in front of your country .For this neighbor to become stable and secure, to develop democratic institution it needs the European perspective”, deputy of the European parliament declared. Head of the European parliament’s delegation on links with Belarus stressed that “the Belarusian authorities have been made so many offers that Europe has nothing to do but to wait for the feedback”. Meanwhile, Bogdan Klikh added “ there are people among those around the Belarusian president who are aware that there is life after Lukashenka”.

Bogdan Klikh supposes that the price hike of the Russian gas may seriously affect the Belarusian economy.

“The Kremlin been accustomed to using the energy resources as political instruments have supposedly decided to promote deterioration of the Belarusian leader’s position, to find a substitute for him, maybe, even among the Belarusian administration. It can’t be excluded that Russia may start supporting the Belarusian opposition. “, declared Bogdan Klikh.
