KGB agent on Belarusian television 16:24, 24/03/2007
Belarusian student Uladzislau Mikhailau, who claimed to the Polish media that he had been recruited by the KGB, gave an interview to the Belarusian television where he accused the administration and students of the programme of Kastus Kalinouski which was launched in Poland to help young Belarusians get education.
After his confession, Ul.Mikhailau told Radio Svaboda:
“It was difficult for me to comprehend why the KGB needed me, what it was that I knew, why they even wanted to bring a criminal action against me. At first I said “no” since I doubted they would initiate a criminal case, but then I realized that everything was possible in our country… To tell the truth, there is nothing for me to regret about…
Actually it cost me much to talk to them on the cell phone. Well, maybe not so much, but still a lump sum. And they had offered money in the very beginning. I refused, but then they gave me the money to pay for the phone, 20 thousand, but that was a bit more. Then they had offered me even more, before I left to Poland…”
Now Uladzislau Mikhailau complains to the Belarusian television about how hard it was for him to study on the Kastus Kalinouski programme, because other students skip classes and work off the money at “antibelarusian” actions in Poland.
“In my view this situation was staged by the Belarusian special forces in order to use the boy and to show that this programme has no advantage. But as the matter of fact, the programme is of great help for the Belarusian youth,” – former Ambassador of Poland to Belarus Maryjusz Maszkiewicz commented for Radio Svaboda on the KGB agent’s interview.
Mikhailau’s words were also commented on by Belarusian guide of the programme Ina Kulei:
“To my regret, the democratic forces cannot use the state press, TV and radio to communicate with the people. Every day we have to fight the lies that the Belarusian television sheds out from TV screens. In such circumstances the truth is difficult to be communicated to the people. We are well aware of the methods that the state forces use – they intimidate people wherever it is possible to do. And all this is done for people to be scared, to loose faith. But we think this is impossible to do, since the person who is reflecting, who has already raised the head will never trust such people.”
