Belarusian companies got the permission for oil mining in Azerbaijan, a corresponding agreement was signed by the Prime Ministers of Belarus and Azerbaijan Syargey Sidorsky and Artur Rasi-zade in Baku on Thursday.
Belarus is in negotiations with Russia on receiving a stabilization credit of $1 billion, told first vice prime minister of Belarus Uladzimir Syamashka to journalists on Thursday. According to earlier reports, Belarus asked Russia to grant a stabilization credit of $1.5 billion. Thus the sum of the credit had been reduced by $500 million.
Students of Wartburg university college (Iowa) have held an action in support of democracy in Belarus. The rally was timed to Freedom Day and dedicated to all who fight for democracy in Belarus.
Today a number of political prisoners have been released from the Minsk prison in Akrestsin Street and from the regional penal colonies. They all participated in preparation and celebration of the Day of Freedom but were accused of minor disorderly conduct and insubordination to the militiamen. But according to the Radio Svaboda, the oppositionists still remain in custody in Minsk, Gomel, Vitebsk, and Barisau.
Andrey Abozaw, a member of a group that in 2005 created satirical cartoons featuring Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka and other top government officials, intends to apply to the Estonian authorities for asylum, BelaPAN reported.
In 2006 more than 300,000 foreign citizens were nonresident aliens in Belarus which were registered in bodies of Internal Affairs Ministry of Belarus and in hotels. It was stated by a deputy head of subdivision on migration and work with foreigners and stateless persons of Citizenship and Migration Department Henadz Bubnovich at a press-conference in Minsk on March 29.
The chair of the council of the Belarusian People’s Republic comments on the events in Minsk on March 25. “After a certain disappointment that the regime hasn’t allowed march on Kalinouski Square, divided people and controlled them in all possible ways, everybody gradually reaches a conclusion that everything was done more moderately reservedly than previous years. I was particularly impressed by the number of demonstrators, especially young people, who were not afraid to protest on the streets. I was to welcome a girl who had a white jacket, red skirt and white stockings. It was wonderful. It reminded me Denmark, when during Nazi occupation red curtains behind white window frames… I was also impressed by a number of white-red-white flags, European flags in Minsk, and a number of white-red symbols on young demonstrators”.
23-24 March the Free Theatre demonstrated its two first- night performances of 2006 “To Be Harold Pinter“ and “Generation Jeans” in Moscow’s Theatrical Center of Vs.Meierhold. The Free Theatre’s performances at the Theatrical Center of Vs.Meierhold may be considered traditional. In winter 2006 the Free Theatre already gave performances at this stage and got very positive references.
Today in the prosecutor’s office of Minsk charges have been filed against two more young activists, Alyaksei Yanusheuski and underage Anastasia Palazhanka. The Charter’97 press-center has been informed about that by a young activist Artur Finkevich, who is at the moment serving a sentence in a corrective labour facility. Yesterday charged were filed against Zmitse Fedaruk, Barys Haretski and Aleh Korban. Activists were demaned to submit written undertaking not to leave the place.
Belarus is carrying out negotiations with the Russian Federation on granting stabilization credit of $1 billion, Belarusian vice Prime Minister Uladzimir Syamashka said to journalists. As the vice Prime Minister believes, after Russian gas price hike “Belarusian economy has got a double uppercut”.
Public prosecutor’s office preferred charges to Young Front’s activists Zmitser Khvedaruk and Aleg Korban, the Radio Svaboda reported. Youth leader Artur Finkevich told the Charter’97 press center that the charges had been also preferred to spokesman of the Young Front Baris Garetsky who is now kept in custody .The young people are suspected of participation in an unregistered organization, the latter having become a conventional statement for persecuting the opposition’s young activists.
German Chancellor and the chair of the Council of European Union Angela Merkel have called upon European deputies to support Belarus on its way to democracy. In the statement in the European parliament on importance of signing Berlin declaration Merkel underlined that this document means “a pledge to stand up for the future of the whole Europe together”.
Vitsebsk activist of the United Civil Party Alena Zaleskaya has been sentenced to a fine of Br 62,000. She was detained on March 25 at Freedom Square in Vitsebsk because she had a white and red scarf on. Besides, Zaleskaya had flowers in her hands, one red and two white carnations.
Yesterday Alyaksandr Lukashenka appeared in public after 17 days of absence. He had never disappeared for such a long term before. Last year after the presidential election when dozens thousands Minsk dwellers took to the streets, the Belarusian leader disappeared for two weeks. Trying to deny rumours about his problems with health, Lukashenka stated: “I am a bit tired. I have a temperature 34.7 °C now. I have never seen such things before. But I feel alright, just look at my hockey training and you’ll see,” Lukahsneka said on Belarusian TV yesterday.
Today lawyers of Alyaksandr Kazulin are to file the last appeal from the judgement to the Supreme Court. In September Minsk city court considered the same appeal from judgement of the court of Maskouski district court, but dismissed it. On the same day Alyaksandr Kazulin was transferred from a remand prison to Vitsebsk colony, where in a month he went on a hunger strike.
