Mahilyou Human Rights Activists Evicted 12:01, 02/04/2007
Mahilyou human rights center and a local branch of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee have received a message with a proposal to cancel a rental contract. The demand of the property department of Mahilyou city executive committee is motivated by the fact that the organization had violated the conditions of the rent. According to the message, a subtenant of the office, a charitable public association “Vodhuk” occupies the premises without a decision of the property department and housing department No.20.
Human rights activists say that the complaints are groundless. According to the head of Mahilyou human rights department Barys Bukhel, they have all necessary documents signed by representatives of community facilities services and a property department. The human rights activist believes that the authorities are just looking for pretexts to deprive them of premises and a legal address. A letter with a demand to revoke cancellation of the rental contract has been sent to the chairman of the regional executive committee Barys Batura, as it is groundless, Barys Bukhel states.
As we have informed, a week ago a local branch of the Belarusian Popular Front party has been left without its headquarters. A legal department refused to prolong a rental contract, Polish Radio informs.
