Independent mass media in Belarus have to overcome a lot of difficulties on their way to the reader .On Tuesday a regular issue of the “ Vitebsky Currier” newspaper was not published. The regional publishing house refused publishing for the reason of indebtedness. Polatsk and Orsha publishing houses of the region also refused publishing the newspaper.
According to chief editor of the newspaper Uladzimir Bazan the debt was not very large. State editions have mush greater debts.
On Friday the situation improved. The question of the Polish Radio if the “ Vitebsky Currier” newspaper is going to be published was answered positively by Uladzimir Bazan.
“It is to be published, however. I talked to the director of the Vitebsk regional publishing house. The agreement has been concluded until 1 May. It is good news. One issue was made as a computer printout. And two missed issues will be published in a smaller size. But we are going to preserve the regular size. We face problems with salary and royalty payment delays. Thus, it is difficult to retain good specialists. The town is not large. It is next to impossible to employ a good programmer, moreover, if we take into account our present unstable situation. Either we are out of money or any other reason… We lack the specialists of the kind”, the editor reported.
The“ Vitebsky Currier” newspaper is 17 years old. Now the newspaper works under hard conditions because it is impossible to sell the newspaper through the “Sayuzdruk” stalls. The Belarusian post office also refused to distribute the newspaper. The newspaper staff carry the newspaper to the subscribers themselves. Last summer the Navapolatsk newspaper “Khimik” stopped being published. Apart from the Vitebsky Currier newspaper only the “Volnaye Glibokaye” newspaper has remained in the Vitebsk region.
