Today Minister of Culture Uladzimir Matvyajchuk visited the Palace of Arts where an exhibition of the cultural association “Pahonya”. However, he was invited to look at paintings and refused.
The exhibition is dedicated to Freedom Day. Works of famous Belarusian artists Ales Marachkin, Ales Pushkin, Ales Tsyrkunou, Ryhor Sitnitsa and others are presented at the exhibition. The prohibited work by Alyaksei Marachkin, “Mindouh’s Tear”, has excited great interest, as well as the series of paintings “Belarusians’ Hands” by Ales Pushkin. Painters do not exclude that the exhibition could be banned.
The minister of culture came to the palace together with his assistants. The palace`s chief administrator accompanied the delegation. Having noticed the journalists, Matvyajchuk wondered why they had come there and tried to hinder them from filming. And then the artist and leader of the union "Pahonia" Alyaksei Marachkin approached the minister. The artist welcomed the minister and invited him to view the paintings. Matvyajchuk replied he came to the palace to discuss the reparation works. He refused to observe the exposition. The delegation left in a few minutes.
“In the morning we were told mayor (the chairman of Minsk city executive committee) Paulau and his assistants would come at 3.30 p.m. As you see, the minister arrived at 3.30 p.m. under a pretext of discussing reparation works. Officials could consider this issue. The situation is interesting. When I invited them to the exhibition and told we are glad to welcome them there, they refused. If Culture Minister Matvyajchuk isn’t interested in that, he really surprises me. What a minister of culture he is?” told Ales Marachkin to the Charter’97 press-center.
