Polish and Lithuanian Deputies against Repressions in Belarus 10:45, 04/04/2007
Polish and Lithuanian parliamentarians in their joint statement accused repressions against opposition in Belarus, Radio Svaboda informs. In the joint statement the head of the commission on Foreign Affairs of the Polish Sejm Pawel Zalewski and a chairman of one of subcommittees of Lithuanian parliament Emmanuelis Zingeris condemn crackdown by the Belarusian regime which caused arrests of a great number of oppositionists who had taken part in celebration of Freedom Day.
The parliamentarians demanded to release political prisoners immediately.
Zalewski and Zingeris on behalf of their parliaments condemned numerous violations of human rights in Lukashenka-ruled Belarus.
“Political changes in Belarus should be actively supported by European states, including the financial support, and the EU could have helped to carry out necessary reforms, however all political prisoners should be released, and persecution of democratic organizations stopped,” the statement reads.
