Pressure Exerted on Klimau in Remand Prison? :: Charter'97 :: News

No procedural actions are carried out against Andrei Klimau, arrested on April 3. The BelaPAN agency has been informed about that by the wife of the politician Tatsyana Leanovich. As said by her, when her husband called her last time, he said that he was denied services of a lawyer. “It has stricken a warning note. Andrei usually defended himself. It is not the first prosecution against him, but he had never insisted on granting him a lawyer. If he said he hadn’t been given an attorney, it means he had demanded a lawyer. And most likely it means that some illegal methods of influence were used against him,” T. Leanovich.

As said by her, A. Klimau refused to cooperate with investigation and give any evidence. “A woman called me. She presented herself as a duty attorney. She said she had been allowed to visit Andrei when a decree on keeping him in prison was issued. An attorney was to be present at that moment. That was all she said,” the wife of the politician said.

Today T. Leanovich has brought food and other things to the arrested. As said by her, the question with the lawyer is decided at the moment.

As we have informed, A. Klimau was arrested in Minsk on April 3. He is charged with a violation under Article 361 part 1 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (“Public appeals to seize the state power, or forcible overthrow of the constitutional order of the Republic of Belarus… or dissemination of materials which contain such appeals with the help of mass media).

A. Klimau faces imprisonment for a term from 1 to 5 years.
