Homel Regional Prosecutor’s Office Refuses to Bring Criminal Case against KGB Agents 17:39, 12/04/2007

In March 2007 Homel activist Siarhei Siamionau applied to Homel regional prosecutor’s office with the request for criminal punishment of the duty officials of Homel regional KGB office. The reason was their refusal to familiarize him with the materials of the investigation and search operations in the case of the unregistered youth center Hart. According to Siamionau, the KGB agents were to have familiarized him with these materials on the basis of article 6 of the law of the Republic of Belarus On investigation and search operations, whereas in their answer they stated that they had not conducted such operations towards the activist.

The first part of discussion in Vilnius of the strategy of the Belarusian democratic forces finished with sensation: the opposition intends to concentrate its forces on evolutionary transition of power to the democratic forces. Alyaksandr Lukashenka considers that there is no other country in the world where heads of the states and their families are so cruelly offended by oppositional mass media as the Belarusian leader and his family is offended by the Belarusian oppositional mass media. “There is no other country where such things happen. Could you find any other fool who is so mocked at by non-state mass media? They pour so much dirt over President that even the Moscovsky Komsomolets can’t dream about”, - the Belarusian leader said at the press conference on Thursday while answering the question why oppositional newspapers are not published at the sate publishing houses asked by editor of the “Narodnaya Volya” newspaper Iosif Syaredzich.

The ministry of justice applied to the Supreme Court of Belarus for suspending the lawsuit on termination of the “Belarusian Helsinki Committee” public association activities. It is to be mentioned that the human rights defenders were blamed of non-payment of taxes within the frame of the TACIS assistance program. That resulted in economic sanctions and additional payments over Br 155 million imposed on the association.

Young activists Ivan Horan and Artur Sasim were detained yesterday in Baranavichy. They were detained by policemen who had noticed badges with national symbols of Belarus on their clothes. After the detention a personal; search was held. Stickers for the protest rally “Charnobylski Shlyakh-2007” were found in their things.
