Opposition Agreed about the Congress :: Charter'97 :: News

During the conference “Positive Alternative for Belarus and its Citizens” which is held in Vilnius under the aegis of the Council of Europe the leaders of opposition found a compromise on the issue of the Congress of Democratic Forces. It was decided to hold the Congress of Democratic Forces by the end of spring. The membership of the Congress is to be extended by the delegates of the First Congress and outstanding figures. The authorities of the delegates elected by means of collecting signatures will be checked by a special commission, the Nasha Niva reports.

Seven regional meetings are to be held before the Congress. The issues, which cannot not be solved by the conciliation committee, are to be suggested to these meetings. Resolutions of these meetings will be binding for everybody. Every meeting is to be attended by 100-150 people. If the majority of the four out of seven meetings will decide to elect a leader (this point is insisted on by leader of the democratic forces of Belarus Alyaksandr Milinkevich), the decision will be taken.
