Klimau is in prison. Investigation continues 18:20, 13/04/2007
10 days have passed since the oppositional leader Andrei Klimau’s arrest. An investigator of Minsk city prosecutor’s office Anatol Hadun told to Radio Svaboda that preliminary investigation continues. “Everything is proceeding according to investigation plan,” Anatol Hadun said. However, he hadn’t told what actions are carried out.
According to the investigator, Andrei Klimau does not complain about conditions of detention and treatment. He receives food parcels form family.
A wife of the political prisoner Tatsyana Leanovich has received another letter from her husband, which is the third in ten days. She does not know details of how the inquiry progresses:
“It is possible that some actions are carried out there. But Andrei does not write about that anything. That is why I think they might not be carried out. He writes that he is more or less healthy, does not complain about conditions, and makes forecasts for the future,” the woman said.
Earlier Tatsyana Leanovich told that her husband was placed to a ward where was he imprisoned during one of previous arrests.
As we have informed, Klimau has spent 4 years in prison under economic charges in the end of the 1990ies. In 2005 he was sentenced to a year and a half of corrective labour. He was charged with organizing a street rally on Freedom Day.
10 days ago Klimau came to the prosecutor’s office of Minsk to check information that a criminal action had been initiated against him. In the prosecutor’s office he was acquainted with the indictment and arrested.
The lawyer Katsyaryna Dudko was together with Klimau when he read the document. She told that the politician hadn’t admitted his guilt in calling for the regime overthrow. Klimau refused to participate in investigation activates.
Andrei Klimau faces up to 3 years of imprisonment. Three months’ arrest of the politician has been sanctioned, but this term could be prolonged, Minsk prosecutor’s office informs.
Andrei Klimau is charged with calls to overthrow the state regime. The reason for opening the case was an article signed by the politician placed on the web site of the United Civil party.
