On April 16 the Day of Belarusian Solidarity is traditionally marked in Belarus and worldwide. In Minsk public activists organized rallies in solidarity with families of the abducted, with political prisoners, and Belarusians repressed by the regime for their participation in oppositional activities. Streamers with demands to release political prisoners, and portraits of the abducted and candles near them are seen in Minsk streets and in regions on this day.
As Radio Svaboda informs, on Solidarity Day the first streamer “Freedom to Young Front members!” emerged in Minsk at 3 p.m. near the metro station “Uskhod”.
Young activists of the democratic movement threw down hundreds of informational leaflets with a demand to release political prisoners and stop prosecution of “Young Front” members.
On walls in Salihorsk, Zhodzina, Baranavichy, Niasvizh, Mahilyou, Brest young people pasted portraits of abducted opposition leaders Yury Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, Anatol Krasouski and journalist Zmitser Zavadski. Near them portraits of political prisoners Zmitser Dashkevich, Artur Finkevich, Katsyaryna Sadouskaya, Mikola Statkevich, Paval Sevyarynets and Andrei Klimau.
Streamers “Freedom to political prisoners!” were placed along streets, including the road near “Kastrychnik” cinema.
In the near future 5 active participants of these actions can be put in prison. They are Young Front activists Barys Haretski, Zmitser Fvedaruk, Nasta Palazhanka, Aleh Korban and Alyaksei Yanusheuski. They are charged with participation in an unregistered organization. The case is sent to the court of Savetski district of Minsk.
“Today’s action of solidarity is dedicated to the Young Front, as recently the wave of repressions started by the KGB and prosecutor’s office is aimed against the young Front. Earlier we demanded to release the Young Front leaders, Paval Sevyarynets, Zmitser Dashkevich and Artur Finkevich, and now we are at risk as well. Thus , 8 of our members are either in prison or face imprisonment,” the Young Front activist Barys Haretski said.
