In Saligorsk people continue coming out to the square :: Charter'97 :: News

16 April people came out to the central square of Saligorsk again carrying portraits of the political prisoners and disappeared Belarusians. Notwithstanding the repressions and pressure on of the authorities , notwithstanding the fact that the last two actions in Saligorsk had been dispersed by the Minsk special regiment around 50 people came out into the square.

This time no Minsk special regiment was noticed and there were fewer local militiamen than usually. Traditionally the action was held for 15 minutes and finished without any incidents. One of the regular participants of the action commented the response of the passers-by to the action:

“It is interesting that the Day of Solidarity at the central square have been monthly held for over a year, moreover, the whole city has been covered with leaflets about political prisoners and political persecution of the public activists, but many people of Saligorsk still do not know why we are standing here. But the majority , certainly, knows that every month we come out into the street and support us”.
