Zmitser Kaspyarovich: We Should Proceed to Dynamic Actions
16:20, 19/04/2007

The chairman of the Society of Monuments protection Zmitser Kaspyarovich comments on the decision of Culture Ministry on the project to turn the building of Bernardines monastery into a hotel complex.

“The ministry hasn’t kept silent for long. On Saturday they told they were unaware of the project, while on Wednesday they considered and approved it. And today state TV showed a placatory news item, allegedly it’s a wonderful idea, to build a hotel and preserve a church,” Kaspyarovich said to “Nasha Niva”.

Z. Kaspyarovich believes that it is not by coincidence, and that the authorities are not going to stop at that.

“Now it is worth continuing the action for saving the monastery. That is why we need to follow all legal procedures. We shall write to ministries, to the prosecutor’s office. But when we would see that the work would start, we would act energetically. Protest actions would be held probably. If thousands of people would not just give signatures in support of the church, but they would take to the streets to defend it; the authorities would have to reckon with believers. It’s high time the leadership of the Roma Catholic Church to join the campaign as well. It would be a good incitement for them if Catholics from all over Belarus start to arrive to Minsk,” told the chairman of the Society of Monuments protection.
