Will authorities commemorate Chernobyl disaster anniversary together with democrats? :: Charter'97 :: News

On the eve of the day of the Chernobyl disaster several public democratic organizations sent a letter to chairman of the Magiliou City Executive Council Viktar Shorikau suggesting their assistance in organizing and holding actions dedicated to the anniversary of the tragedy.

In reply signed by deputy of chairman Aleg Litsyankou to the call the authorities agreed to the participation of the democratic public only in one of the events, i.e., in the mourning meeting at the Magiliou memorial to the Chernobyl disaster liquidators. This meeting was reported in the official letter to be organized by association of the law enforcement bodies ”Shield of Chernobyl”. It is written in the letter that the democrats are allowed to participate in it as well as other people. It is not clear from the letter if the speeches are foreseen at the meeting or if it is to be a silent ceremony of laying writhes and flowers .The democrats were also confused by the fact that only from that letter they learnt for the first time about the existence of the public militia organization which was reported in the letter as active.
